Donna as Speaker and Author
Donna Stoering has always been a "communicator" whether through music or words, or both. From a very young age she was composing piano sonatas, songs, poetry, short stories, plays and entire musicals (scripted dialogues and music/lyrics for the songs as well) which she was funded to produce at the town community center, directing actors and musicians of all ages. When she began touring nationwide for concert tours, one of her coaches at the time (James Dick) insisted that his students get accustomed to speaking informally about their pieces before performing them to their audiences. Donna quickly grew to love this additional opportunity for communication and interaction in what had traditionally been a rather staid, formal and "hushed" environment, and that has impacted her style of performance approach ever since, whether in halls seating 5,000, 500 or 50. And that experience, in turn, led to her development of a similar style of "exuberant warmth and availability" in all of her television, radio and speaking appearances.
When Ms Stoering was traveling as an Artistic Ambassador for the UK and USA to countries worldwide, she was invited to speak and perform on the national networks of those countries. She was then offered her own classical music television channel on a European network and began hosting, performing and producing award-winning programs about the master musicians of all cultures, documenting their struggles to sustain or restore their own classical instrument traditions against an onslaught of global pop media (these programs eventually became part of her Telly-Award winning series, TravelsWithMusic.com).
Donna's growing relationships with musicians worldwide showed her that while most of us have a "heart of service" they are unsure of how they can set up their own performance and broadcast opportunities to be a positive channel of communication, or impact the lives and needs of their own communities. This convinced her of the need to launch (in 1998) the global FP/NP hybrid Listen For Life, and then later to expand its mission beyond preserving classical music cultures of all countries, to generating projects and programs that would "inspire and empower musicians of all cultures to use their gifts in the service of others" (ListenForLife.org). These successful projects, and their innovative for-profit/non-profit structure, have led to her being invited to address U.N.-related organizations, international venture capital conferences, media production initiatives and national educational symposiums. Ms Stoering is also a frequent keynote speaker and panelist at music, media, publishing, education and social entrepreneurship conferences.
Clips from some of these speaking engagements can be found on various YouTube channels.
For many years, Ms Stoering has served as a music journalist and reviewer for both hard copy and online publications based in Europe, UK, and North America; many of those reviews and articles can be found online. A university in Minnesota published the transcript of her highly popular lecture-recital/broadcast on their Arts and Culture series, turning it into a small book that is now in its third printing. (And for updates on an upcoming major book release, keep an eye on Donna's blog, on this site).
Donna has also been invited to participate as a TEDx presenter in different countries, over the years, and for one of these TEDx events the organizers challenged her with the idea of communicating both verbally and pianistically, at the same time. The result? A highly original TEDx talk that can be viewed below.
