SOLO PIANO Repertoire (recitals of any length, TV/radio broadcasts, music festivals, celebrity concert series, lecture-recitals):
Due to Ms. Stoering's work with the master musicians of all cultures, she is able to premiere unusual but highly accessible piano works from a large number of countries, cultures, and instrumental styles. This results in unique and exciting programs of any length, whether in broadcasts, concert series, festivals, or lecture-recitals at conservatories and universities.
Donna is known for her innovative programming and informal approach to recitals, speaking to/with the audiences about the pieces, in all sizes of venues.
And she also loves to create interesting "themed" programs as well - one of her most popular being "Music of the Dance" which shares a wide range of composers/pieces based on dance rhythms, from Bach and Schubert to Granados, Grieg, Chopin and Fernandez (a Brazilian composer who captured the folk and dance idioms of his country in short piano pieces of incredible charm).
Donna has, in recent years, been invited to create her own piano recital series within major music festivals, and often chooses to perform programs based on individual countries, for example one day's program celebrates France: a Bach French Suite, a Faure Prelude, Debussy pieces, Beethoven variations on a French song, some Ravel, and ending with Chopin pieces composed in France.
She is highly regarded for her performances and recordings of Scriabin and Rachmaninov, and has particularly identified with the latter composer throughout her life, making her concerto debut as a teenager in Rachmaninov concerti. More recently she championed his fiendishly complex and rarely performed Piano Sonata No1 (d minor) with broadcast performances in Russia, Hong Kong, Great Britain, and the USA .
Donna's first award-winning album was a collection of Debussy works, and she still loves to combine a variety of Debussy, Rachmaninov and Chopin works together for popular programs. Critics have hailed the "directness and strength" of her Chopin (London Times) along with her "feeling and fluidity...her heart seems to belong to Chopin" (Los Angeles Times). Most recently she has rediscovered Brahms - his Rhapsodies, Intermezzi and "autumnal, heartbreaking" solo piano waltzes.
When asked to give a lecture-recital on an Arts and Culture series at a university in Minnesota, Ms Stoering created/sent a 13-page questionnaire to 30 living composers asking their thoughts regarding the intersections between composer, performer and audience. Many of them were so intrigued they offered to compose new works for her to premiere in that recital, which was later broadcast on NPR - and the resulting audience response inspired the university to turn the transcript of Donna's lecture into a published book which is now in its 3rd printing. Composers continue to write new works for Ms Stoering to premiere, and one of these in particular, "Walk Within Winter" by world-music composer Brent Heisinger, she has now premiered in over 30 countries.
